Where it came from
Kaya, Spirits' Justice was released as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor set in early 2024. The card depicts Kaya Cassir, a recurring planeswalker character within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse known for her ability to interact with ghosts and ethereal entities. This specific iteration leans into the set's central theme of a murder mystery on the plane of Ravnica, placing Kaya in the role of an investigator navigating the political and supernatural intrigue of the city-plane.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a veteran contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Briclot’s design focuses on Kaya’s signature aesthetic—utilizing ethereal blues and ghostly highlights—while integrating the sharp, noir-inspired stylistic choices associated with the Murders at Karlov Manor expansion. The card was designed to function as a control-oriented planeswalker, reflecting her role as a professional ghost assassin whose mechanics emphasize the manipulation of graveyards and exile zones.
