Kazandu Refuge

Kazandu Refuge was originally printed in the Zendikar expansion in 2009, reflecting the set's core theme of land-focused mechanics and the rugged, unpredictable nature of the Zendikar plane. The card was later reprinted as part of the 2011 Duel Decks: Ajani vs. Nicol Bolas, a product designed to showcase the thematic clash between a heroic leonin planeswalker and an ancient, power-hungry elder dragon. This reprint placed the land within a pre-constructed environment, balancing the gameplay of the duel deck by offering players a way to color-fix their mana while gaining incremental life.

The artwork for Kazandu Refuge was created by artist Veronique Meignaud, who was a frequent contributor to the Zendikar block. Her work on the land aimed to capture the lush, untamed aesthetic of the Guul Draz region, utilizing vibrant, dreamlike color palettes that became synonymous with the set’s visual identity.
