Where it came from
Kethis, the Hidden Hand was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. Designed as a legendary creature, the card was conceptualized by the Wizards of the Coast design team to provide a high-synergy engine for graveyard-based strategies. Its design intentionally focuses on enabling players to cast legendary cards from their graveyard, a mechanic that defined its competitive utility within the Commander and Modern formats.
The artwork was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who chose a dark, ethereal aesthetic to reflect the character's status as a legendary figure emerging from the shadows. Upon its release, the card received significant attention for its complex interactions and potential to break resource parity in longer games. It quickly became a staple in tournament play, particularly in formats where the depth of the legendary card pool allows for deep strategic customization.
