Provenance

Where it came from

Khalni Garden was originally introduced in the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2010, designed to represent the lush, dangerous wilderness of the plane of Zendikar. It reflects the set's mechanical focus on land-based interactions and tokens, functioning as a utility land that provides both mana and a defensive creature. The card was later included in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a boxed set that compiled various promotional and supplemental cards from the game's history to support the multiplayer Planechase format.

The artwork, illustrated by the artist Karl Kopinski, captures the dense, verticality-focused aesthetic of the Zendikar plane. Kopinski aimed to evoke a sense of overgrown, ancient natural beauty, balancing the mechanical utility of the card with the atmospheric storytelling that defined the Zendikar block. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various budget and Commander decks for its ability to provide two permanents for the price of a single land drop.
