Where it came from
Killer Cosplay was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth Un-set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed to celebrate the intersection of science fiction and carnival aesthetics, the set introduced mechanics that blended traditional card play with interactive, comedic elements. The card itself utilizes the 'sticker' mechanic introduced in the set, which allows players to physically place adhesive labels on cards to alter their game stats, reflecting a playful, meta-narrative approach to the hobby.
The illustration for Killer Cosplay was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, known for his dynamic and character-focused contributions to the game. Ejsing was tasked with depicting a character mid-transformation, capturing the whimsical and chaotic spirit of a science-fiction convention gone awry. Upon its debut, the card was received as a humorous curiosity, appreciated by casual players for its inventive design and its affectionate nod to the cosplay subculture prevalent within the gaming community.
