Where it came from
Killer Cosplay was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion, a set designed by Wizards of the Coast to explore the boundaries of Magic: The Gathering through 'un-set' mechanics. These cards are intentionally irreverent, focusing on top-down designs that lean into science fiction and carnival aesthetics. The card serves as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the practice of cosplay within gaming subcultures, emphasizing the transformative nature of wearing a costume.
The artwork was illustrated by Matt Stikker, who utilized a bold, graphic style to depict the card's ability to 'become' another creature. Stikker’s design process for Unfinity sought to balance the humorous nature of the set with the visual language of traditional fantasy illustration. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional curiosity by players, praised for its clever mechanical interpretation of the cosplay theme while remaining firmly within the whimsical design space characteristic of the Un-series.
