Where it came from
Killer's Mask was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Duskmourn: House of Horror. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1980s and 1990s horror tropes, transposing these aesthetic conventions into the game's expansive multiverse. The card is designed to represent the sinister, slasher-movie iconography that defines the plane of Duskmourn, a world entirely contained within a singular, malevolent mansion.
The artwork, created by illustrator Justyna Gil, emphasizes the uncanny nature of the mask, leaning into the unsettling mystery of an object that hides the identity of a relentless pursuer. As an equipment card, its mechanical function mirrors the trope of a killer gaining strength and notoriety through their disguise, fitting seamlessly into the set's top-down design goal of evoking classic horror cinema for both players and collectors.
