Provenance

Where it came from

Killing Wave was released in May 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third set in the Innistrad block, it focused on the triumphant return of the archangel Avacyn to a plane plagued by darkness. The card reflects the set's gothic horror themes and the mechanical focus on black mana's role in sacrificial rituals, forcing opponents to choose between losing their creatures or paying significant life.

The artwork was commissioned from Steve Argyle, a prolific illustrator known for his dynamic and intense style within the game. Argyle sought to capture the visceral, sweeping destruction implied by the card's name and mechanical effect. The design features a cascading, supernatural force overwhelming a battlefield, a visual metaphor that resonated with the set's narrative of high-stakes conflict and celestial intervention.
