Provenance

Where it came from

Killing Wave was released as a rare sorcery in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering expansion Avacyn Restored. The set centered on the narrative of the archangel Avacyn returning to the plane of Innistrad to restore balance against encroaching darkness. Mechanically, the card was designed to force opponents into a difficult decision: pay life for each creature they control or sacrifice them, thematic to the high-stakes, gothic horror atmosphere of the block.

The artwork for this version was provided by Michael Komarck, a prolific fantasy illustrator known for his dramatic lighting and textured character work. Komarck was tasked with visualizing the devastation of a supernatural tide, opting for a sweeping, cinematic composition that emphasizes the destructive scale of the spell. Upon release, the card was noted for its ability to punish board-state stagnation, cementing its place as a distinct, if situational, piece within the set's broader mechanical design.
