Provenance

Where it came from

Kinjalli's Sunwing is a creature card originally appearing in the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering, later reprinted in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set with collector number 130. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, it represents the dinosaur-riding culture of the Sun Empire on the plane of Ixalan. The creature serves as a mechanical representation of the Empire's reverence for the sun, utilizing its static ability to slow down opponents by making their creatures and artifacts enter the battlefield tapped, reflecting the 'dazzling' nature of the sun's light.

The artwork for this card was created by Bram Sels, who sought to capture the majestic and imposing nature of the Pterosaur-like mount. The design choice to include flying, vigilance, and a taxing effect on opponents was intentional for the White color identity, which often focuses on controlling the pace of play. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players in the Commander format as a functional utility piece that offers both offensive pressure and defensive utility in board-state management.
