Where it came from
Admiral Beckett Brass first appeared as part of the 2017 Ixalan expansion, representing the Pirate faction in a setting inspired by Mesoamerican mythology and high-seas exploration. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the character was intended to embody the ruthless leadership of the Brazen Coalition, emphasizing the tribal mechanics of stealing permanents from opponents. This specific card, numbered 264, is a reprint from The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander series, released in 2023 to integrate older tribal commanders into modern play formats.
The visual design of Admiral Beckett Brass leans into the vibrant, adventurous aesthetic established by the Ixalan plane. Artists involved in the set sought to balance the gritty nature of a pirate captain with the fantastical elements of the setting, resulting in a character who reflects both nautical authority and the chaotic spirit of the high seas. The card has been well-received by players focusing on tribal synergy, serving as a cornerstone for Grixis-colored decks built around theft and aggressive board control.
