Where it came from
Kishla Village was released as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm promotional set, a series of cards distributed primarily through organized play events during the Khans of Tarkir block of Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to engage the player base by offering unique, alternate-art versions of cards that emphasized the warring clans and the shifting timelines of the Tarkir plane, a setting inspired by themes of Eastern fantasy and dynastic conflict.
The art direction for this promotional series focused on reflecting the vibrant, militaristic aesthetic of the Abzan Houses, the clan represented by this card. Illustrators tasked with the Tarkir cycle aimed to convey the resilience and architectural history of the desert-dwelling faction. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors who favored the distinct, frame-breaking treatment of the promotional series, which distinguished these versions from their standard pack-inserted counterparts.
