Kitesail Freebooter

Kitesail Freebooter was first introduced in the Ixalan expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2017, later appearing with updated card frames and set symbols in Core Set 2021. As a creature card representing a human pirate, it was designed to mechanically support the tribal synergies common to the plane of Ixalan, which centers on themes of exploration, conquest, and high-seas conflict. Its ability to look at an opponent's hand and exile a nonland card serves as a staple effect in black-aligned 'hand disruption' strategies, often utilized in competitive play to slow down an opponent's game plan.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of the game. Stewart’s rendering captures the dynamic movement of the pirate mid-flight, utilizing the distinct aesthetic of the Ixalan setting, which draws heavily from Mesoamerican influences and classic seafaring lore. Within the community, the card is recognized for its efficient mana cost and practical utility, making it a reliable choice for players focusing on aggressive deck styles that prioritize tactical interference.
