Where it came from
Malefic Scythe was introduced in the Core Set 2021 for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in July 2020. As a core set expansion, it was designed to provide foundational mechanics and accessible power levels for both new and veteran players, serving as a reintroduction to the game's core themes while maintaining legal status in Standard format play.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to convey the weapon's flavor as an Equipment card that grows stronger as creatures perish. The design focuses on the synergy between sacrifice mechanics and combat utility, a hallmark of black-aligned cards in the set, and it was received as a solid, if situational, addition to limited play environments.
