Where it came from
The Kjeldoran Home Guard was released in 1996 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Alliances. The set was designed to explore the ongoing narrative of the Ice Age setting, specifically focusing on the struggle for survival in a post-apocalyptic, frozen world. This card represents the military forces of the nation of Kjeldor, illustrating their role in maintaining order and defense during the era's harsh environmental and political upheavals.
The illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational figure in early Magic art known for his iconic portrayals of creatures and spells. Rush aimed to convey the steadfast, defensive nature of the Home Guard through traditional fantasy aesthetics, emphasizing their duty-bound character. Upon release, the card became a notable example of the set's focus on creature-based utility, frequently cited for its role in limited play formats and its thematic contribution to the lore of the Ice Age cycle.
