Provenance

Where it came from

Undergrowth was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set, Alliances was designed to shake up the competitive meta-game by introducing powerful cards that rewarded players for managing their hand size and resource counts. It is remembered for its distinct art direction, which transitioned away from the more eclectic, varied styles of early Magic sets toward a slightly more cohesive, albeit still experimental, aesthetic.

The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several pieces to the expansion. The illustration aims to evoke the dense, claustrophobic atmosphere suggested by the card's name, utilizing organic, tangled patterns to represent the natural terrain. At the time of release, the card was generally viewed as a niche utility item within the game’s vast library, prized more by thematic collectors than by top-tier tournament players.
