Provenance

Where it came from

Knight of the Mists was released in 1996 as part of the Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first set designed after the game's initial success to be heavily influenced by Japanese mythology and aesthetic themes, Visions sought to expand the game's narrative scope beyond traditional Western fantasy. This card, a blue creature with a phasing ability, was intended to showcase the complex timing mechanics that defined the set's unique gameplay identity during the mid-nineties.

The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several pieces to the era. Her illustration for the Knight of the Mists captures the ethereal, shifting nature of the phasing mechanic, utilizing soft, hazy tones to represent the card's namesake mists. At the time of its release, the card was received as a functional, if niche, inclusion in blue-aligned decks, recognized primarily for its role in testing the limits of the phasing rule set introduced in the Mirage block.
