Provenance

Where it came from

The Knight of the Mists card featured in the 1997 World Championship Decks was a functional reprint of the original Mirage expansion card, issued as part of a commemorative set designed to showcase the strategies used by the top players at that year's World Championship in Seattle. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a way for fans to replicate the experience of playing with the professional-level deck lists that dominated the tournament meta, complete with distinct gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures of the players.

The design of the original card was brought to life by artist Daren Bader, who utilized his signature painterly style to evoke the mysterious, ethereal nature of a knight emerging from dense fog. Within the 1997 World Championship context, the card was prized for its utility in the 'ProsBloom' deck, a famous combo archetype built around the card Cadaverous Bloom. While the cards were not tournament-legal in standard play, they became highly regarded in the community for their historical significance and the unique window they provided into the competitive Magic landscape of the late 1990s.
