Provenance

Where it came from

Knight Watch was released in 2013 as part of the Gatecrash expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Ravnica, the card depicts the vigilant soldiers of the Boros Legion, one of the ten guilds that maintain order in the sprawling, cityscape world. It was designed as a white common-rarity enchantment, intended to bolster creature-heavy strategies by granting vigilance to all creatures the player controls, effectively allowing them to both attack and defend during each round.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Stewart. Stewart’s composition emphasizes the rigid, militaristic aesthetic of the Boros guild, focusing on the watchful stance of the sentinels rather than active combat. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, mid-tier utility piece for limited formats, appreciated by players for its ability to stabilize board states and provide a defensive advantage in aggressive white-based decks.
