Provenance

Where it came from

Syndicate Enforcer was released in 2013 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Gatecrash. The card depicts a member of the Orzhov Syndicate, one of the ten iconic guilds inhabiting the cityscape of Ravnica. This set focused on the guild-based mechanics of the plane, and the card's 'extort' ability was designed to mechanically represent the Syndicate’s thematic blend of religious ceremony and predatory debt collection.

The artwork was created by illustrator Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the game known for his dark and atmospheric painterly style. Staples leaned into the guild’s signature aesthetic of ghostly apparitions paired with opulent, gothic architecture. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in Limited formats due to its utility in grinding out incremental life advantages, cementing its status as a quintessential example of Orzhov design identity.
