Koma, Cosmos Serpent // Koma, Cosmos Serpent

Koma, Cosmos Serpent is a prominent centerpiece of the Kaldheim set, a Magic: The Gathering expansion released in 2021 that drew heavily from Norse mythology. The Art Series version, numbered 60, serves as a high-fidelity showcase for the creature design, prioritizing the visual complexity of the serpent as it weaves through the cosmic landscape of the setting. It was produced to highlight the collaborative effort between digital illustrators and the game's art direction team, aiming to capture the scale and ethereal nature of a world-eating entity.

The illustration was crafted by artist Jesper Ejsing, whose work is characterized by a high level of detail and a sense of fluid movement. Ejsing intended to convey a sense of awe through the creature's immense proportions and the swirling, crystalline patterns of its body. Within the community, the artwork was received as a definitive portrayal of Koma, frequently praised for its vibrant color palette and the technical proficiency required to render the serpent's intricate, multi-limbed physiology.
