Where it came from
The Kormus Bell first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, conceptualized by Richard Garfield as a unique artifact that transforms Swamps into creatures. This card serves as a thematic cornerstone of early expansion mechanics, reflecting the game's initial focus on high-risk, high-reward tactical board control. The original artwork, crafted by Dan Frazier, depicts a somber, monastic bell with an ominous presence, capturing the dark aesthetic that defined the game's early identity.
The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a non-tournament legal tribute to the game's formative years. This specific printing retains the iconic aesthetic of the original 1993 release while utilizing modern card stock and a distinct commemorative back design. It was produced to celebrate three decades of the franchise, appealing primarily to collectors who value the historical lineage of classic artifact cards and the evolution of the game’s visual legacy.
