Where it came from
The Kormus Bell was introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, with this specific Unlimited Edition version following shortly after to meet the intense demand for the burgeoning Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was conceptualized during the game's initial development to introduce unique, chaotic board states by transforming resource-producing Swamps into vulnerable creature cards, a mechanic that emphasized the game's focus on high-risk, high-reward tactical play.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game's original art director. Myrfors utilized a dark, atmospheric style typical of early Magic sets, aiming to evoke a sense of ancient, unsettling artifacts. While the card is often cited by players for its unconventional effect rather than competitive dominance, it remains a notable example of the experimental design philosophy that defined the game's foundational era.
