Where it came from
Korvold and the Noble Thief was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in 2023. This card belongs to a series of Enchanting Tales cards, which are bonus sheets featuring reimagined reprints and new designs inspired by fairy tales and folklore. The card specifically draws from the established history of Korvold, Cursed King, a character first introduced in the Throne of Eldraine expansion as a greedy, dragon-like ruler obsessed with sacrifice and power.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Liiga Smilshkalne, who utilized a distinct storybook-inspired aesthetic meant to evoke classic fairy tale illustrations. The piece depicts the dynamic tension between the imposing, avaricious Korvold and the small, daring thief attempting to pilfer from his hoard. This visual style was received well by players who appreciated the cohesive artistic theme of the set, which aimed to revitalize the high-fantasy narrative of Eldraine.
