Sentinel of Lost Lore

Sentinel of Lost Lore was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a rare creature card that draws mechanical inspiration from the set's focus on enchantment-based themes and the literary, fairy-tale aesthetic of the Eldraine plane. Its inclusion in the set reflects the ongoing design philosophy of Wizards of the Coast to blend top-down flavor, such as the concept of a sentient guardian of forgotten stories, with gameplay mechanics that reward players for interacting with their own libraries.

The card’s illustration was rendered by artist Jason Rainville, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. Rainville’s design for the Sentinel centers on a stoic, ethereal figure integrated with ancient, weathered architecture, aiming to evoke a sense of scholarly weight and timeless mystery. Upon release, the card was received as a solid utility piece within the Green color identity, noted by players for its dual ability to generate mana and provide card advantage through its unique 'night' and 'day' transformation-adjacent mechanics, grounding its role as both a functional engine and a flavorful narrative piece.
