Where it came from
Kothophed, Soul Hoarder was originally released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins as part of the core narrative focusing on the origin stories of five iconic planeswalkers. The card depicts a powerful demon from the plane of Innistrad, acting as a pivotal figure in Liliana Vess's backstory. This specific version was reimagined for the Secret Lair series, a line of premium, curated cards released by Wizards of the Coast that frequently features unique artistic interpretations and thematic reprints.
The artwork for this Secret Lair edition was created by artist Yongjae Choi, who utilized a distinct, stylized approach to capture the sinister, opportunistic nature of the demon. The design choice was intended to lean into a darker, more haunting aesthetic consistent with Innistrad’s gothic horror themes. Upon release, this version was noted for its departure from the card's original appearance, drawing attention from collectors who prioritize high-concept illustration within the game's expansive visual library.
