Where it came from
Kothophed, Soul Hoarder was originally released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins, designed as a legendary creature representing a demonic entity from the multiverse. The card depicts a powerful demon known for its ability to draw cards at the expense of its own minions, grounding its mechanical design in the thematic concept of a greedy, manipulative patron of souls.
This specific iteration, numbered 162★, was released as part of a Secret Lair Drop, a series of curated, limited-release sets featuring alternative artistic interpretations. The artwork for this version was commissioned to reimagine the demon's appearance, moving away from traditional fantasy tropes to offer a stylistic, often abstract, visual take that was intended to appeal specifically to collectors and players interested in unique, limited-edition aesthetics within the game's expansive visual history.
