Provenance

Where it came from

Koth's Courier was released in 2011 as part of the Mirrodin Besieged set, a pivotal chapter in the Magic: The Gathering storyline depicting the corruption of the metallic plane of Mirrodin by the Phyrexians. Within the game's narrative, the card represents the resistance efforts led by the planeswalker Koth of the Hammer, serving as a tactical asset for the Mirran faction as they struggled against the creeping metallic rot.

The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, a veteran illustrator known for his work on The Sandman series. Dringenberg’s design focuses on the urgent, gritty aesthetic of the Mirran resistance, utilizing a visceral visual style that captures the desperate nature of the courier's mission. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its specific utility in red decks, particularly its ability to interact with the block's distinct 'metalcraft' mechanic.
