Where it came from
Kotis, the Fangkeeper was introduced in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the flavor of the plane of Tarkir, focusing on the draconic history and the shifting temporal realities of the setting. The card reflects the set's central themes of survival and the presence of dragon-related iconography within the tribal culture of the world.
The artwork and conceptual design were commissioned to evoke a rugged, keeper-like aesthetic that fits within the lore of Tarkir’s warrior clans. As part of a larger tactical game, the card was developed to provide specific utility within the color-coded framework of the game's mechanics, intended to balance playability with the immersive world-building established for the Tarkir block.
