Where it came from
Dragonback Assault was released in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm expansion, a set deeply rooted in the lore of the plane of Tarkir. This card draws upon the thematic conflict between the dragon-worshipping clans and the dragon-slaying cultures that defines the setting. It was crafted to represent the brutal, high-stakes kinetic warfare practiced by the Mardu Horde, capturing the aggressive philosophy of a culture that values speed, mobility, and overwhelming force in battle.
The illustration was rendered to evoke the chaotic energy of a dragon-mounted raid, emphasizing the visceral connection between rider and beast. The design team sought to capture the essence of a 'go wide' strategy, providing a mechanical way to reward players for committing multiple creatures to a singular, decisive offensive strike. Upon its release, it was noted for its utility in limited formats, where its ability to manipulate power and toughness could unexpectedly turn the tide of a combat engagement.
