Where it came from
The Krovikan Sorcerer was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the first standalone expansion set not requiring the base game to play, Ice Age was designed to evoke a desolate, frozen world of survival and ancient magic. The card was created to provide a repeatable, sacrifice-based damage mechanic, fitting the dark, sacrificial themes associated with the cultist factions of the Krovos region in the game's lore.
The illustration was crafted by artist Quinton Hoover, known for his distinct, fluid line work and iconic contributions to early Magic sets. Hoover focused on the macabre aesthetic of the Krovikan cult, depicting a robed figure channeling elemental energy through the ritualistic sacrifice of thralls. The card became a staple for players interested in complex utility interactions, and it remains a representative example of the mid-nineties aesthetic that defined the game's early expansion period.
