Where it came from
Soul Barrier was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore a frozen, post-apocalyptic setting, introducing new mechanics that rewarded players for interacting with their opponents' actions. This card specifically functions as a tax-based defensive enchantment, reflecting the set's broader theme of taxing resources and slowing down gameplay through strategic obstacles.
The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several pieces to the set during a period when the game's aesthetic was transitioning toward more distinct thematic identities. Her illustration captures a surreal, ethereal quality, depicting a spectral fortification that aligns with the card's defensive purpose. Upon release, Soul Barrier was recognized for its utility in punishing aggressive playstyles, though it remained a niche inclusion that helped establish the tactical variety characteristic of the mid-nineties Magic expansions.
