Where it came from
Land Grant was released in the 1999 expansion Mercadian Masques, a set designed to evoke a bustling, mercantile world inspired by seafaring trade and political maneuvering. The card was created to provide green decks with a specialized way to thin their libraries and ensure land drops without spending mana, reflecting the set's thematic focus on resource management and low-cost utility.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's history. His design depicts a stylized, parchment-style map unfurling, a visual choice that reinforces the expansion's maritime and discovery-oriented setting. The card is noted by players for its distinctive ability to be cast for free if the player controls no lands, a mechanical quirk that made it a foundational tool for high-speed aggressive decks during its era.
