Provenance

Where it came from

Lavalanche was released in the Commander 2016 set as part of the Open Hostage deck, which focused on the four-color identity of red, green, white, and black. Designed as a powerful sorcery for multiplayer environments, the card builds upon the traditional red-mana direct damage archetype by incorporating a scaleable effect that punishes opponents based on the number of lands they control. It was created to offer players a high-impact finishing move that scales effectively with the length of a Commander game.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a vivid, intense color palette to evoke the imagery of a molten, elemental flood. The design goal was to translate the visceral feeling of a mountain-side disaster into a game mechanic. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective board-wipe alternative, praised for its ability to clear multiple threats while simultaneously pressuring an opponent's life total in late-game scenarios.
