Provenance

Where it came from

Wheel of Fate was originally released in the 2006 Time Spiral set, designed to pay homage to the history of Magic: The Gathering by revisiting mechanics and cards from the game's early years. It is a functional reimagining of the iconic Wheel of Fortune, replacing a direct mana cost with the suspend mechanic. This design choice was intended to balance the powerful effect of discarding one's hand to draw seven new cards by forcing a four-turn wait, reflecting the set's thematic preoccupation with time-bending and past-meets-future gameplay.

The version included in Commander 2016, numbered 138, features illustration by Pete Venters. Known for his extensive contributions to the game during its formative era, Venters provided artwork that captures the chaotic and cyclical nature of the card's effect. Within the context of the Commander format, this card has been well-regarded by players for its synergy with decks that benefit from graveyard filling or hand refreshing, serving as a tactical staple that rewards patient strategic planning.
