Where it came from
Legion Vanguard was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Wizards of the Coast designed this set specifically for the Modern format, opting to skip a standard release in favor of printing new-to-Modern cards and featuring complex mechanics tailored to veteran players. The card reflects the set's high-fantasy aesthetic, focusing on the tactical deployment of creatures in a combat-heavy environment.
The visual design for the card was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensive work to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Her approach emphasizes dynamic movement and strong character silhouette, fitting the card's mechanical utility as a vanguard unit. Upon release, the set was noted for its balance of nostalgia and power-level adjustments, and Legion Vanguard was generally received as a functional role-player within black-aligned sacrifice or aggressive strategies.
