Where it came from
Imperial Recruiter was originally printed in the Portal Three Kingdoms set in 1999, designed to bring the strategic depth of Magic: The Gathering to a wider audience through a simplified, lore-heavy expansion based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The card remained a niche, high-value staple in Eternal formats for years, known for its powerful ability to tutor for creatures with low power directly into play, which allowed for consistent access to utility engines and combo pieces.
The Modern Horizons 2 version, featuring the artwork of Nils Hamm, was released in 2021 as part of a specialized set designed to introduce cards directly into the Modern format. Hamm's illustration leans into the set's aesthetic goal of balancing traditional fantasy motifs with the high-fantasy signature style of the game. The card was widely welcomed by players for its improved availability, making this essential tool more accessible to those building competitive decks in Modern and Commander.
