Lethal Vapors was released in 2003 as part of the Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering, the final set in the Onslaught block. Designed as a rare black enchantment, the card introduced a unique gameplay mechanic that allowed players to skip their turns indefinitely in exchange for destroying creatures, reflecting the set's focus on high-risk, high-reward tactical choices. The narrative backdrop for Scourge involved the aftermath of the Mirari's influence on the continent of Otaria, where the lingering magical corruption is illustrated through the card's grim, ethereal imagery.
