Lethe Lake

Lethe Lake was released in 2009 as part of the inaugural Planechase set, a supplement for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game that introduced the concept of interdimensional travel to the gameplay experience. Designed as a large-format planar card, it was intended to represent the surreal, memory-wiping environment of the underworld of Meletis within the game's multiverse. The mechanics were crafted to mirror the lore of the lake, forcing players to discard cards to simulate the erosion of memory.

The atmospheric illustration was created by artist Svetlin Velinov, who focused on ethereal, melancholic visuals to evoke a sense of stagnant, supernatural waters. The card design received positive attention from the community for its thematic resonance and its ability to add a layer of unpredictability to matches. As a foundational piece of the Planechase format, it helped define the tactile and strategic departure from standard play that Wizards of the Coast sought to achieve with this product line.
