Provenance

Where it came from

Levitation was originally printed in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001. As a staple blue enchantment, it was designed to provide a passive aerial advantage to all creatures under a player's control. The Seventh Edition printing introduced a modernized card frame, moving away from the aesthetic of the early sets to a cleaner, more standardized look that defined the game's shift into the new millennium.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition release was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic early artists for the game. Rush utilized a classic fantasy style that emphasized the ethereal nature of the card's effect, focusing on a figure suspended in the air. The design was intended to be straightforward and functional, reflecting the core set philosophy of providing foundational gameplay elements for new and returning players.
