Where it came from
Lexivore was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued expansion, the first Magic: The Gathering set dedicated entirely to parody and meta-humor. Designed by Wizards of the Coast to break the traditional rules of the game, the set served as a creative outlet for developers to experiment with mechanics that could not exist in competitive play. The card itself relies on a word-game gimmick, requiring players to physically tear up other cards to activate its ability, which reflects the irreverent and self-aware tone of the entire collection.
The illustration for Lexivore was created by artist Jeff Miracola, who leaned into the absurd premise by depicting a creature literally consuming pieces of parchment. Miracola’s style for the set embraced a whimsical, cartoonish aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the high-fantasy realism of contemporary Magic sets. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a humorous novelty that prioritized social experience and table-top spectacle over tactical balance.
