Where it came from
Lier, Disciple of the Drowned was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The character serves as a significant narrative figure within the set’s horror-themed lore, depicting a powerful mage who seeks to embrace the inevitable rising of the tides on the plane of Innistrad. This specific version is a promotional variant, characterized by the 's' suffix in its collector number, which differentiates it from the standard card frame found in booster packs.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a dark, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the character's unsettling connection to the Drowned. The design aims to convey a sense of fluid, watery decay consistent with the set's Gothic horror motif. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its unique mechanical ability to grant flashback to spells, making it a distinct inclusion in competitive graveyard-themed deck archetypes.
