Where it came from
Lightning Talons was released as part of the Magic 2014 core set, which debuted in the summer of 2013. Designed as a common-rarity enchantment within the red color identity, the card was crafted to serve as an efficient tool for the Limited environment, specifically supporting aggressive strategies by providing a creature with both a power boost and the haste ability to bypass typical defensive timing.
The card features artwork by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his gritty, high-energy style. Walker’s depiction of the spectral, crackling claws emphasizes the kinetic, volatile nature of red magic. While the card is not a staple in eternal constructed formats, it remains a recognized example of the functional design philosophy that defined the core sets of that era, focusing on clear, thematic utility for newer players.
