What it does
Each player exiles all creature cards from their graveyard, then sacrifices all creatures they control, then puts all cards they exiled this way onto the battlefield.
They seemed like black holes in the deep shade behind them. Frodo thought that he heard a faint hiss as of venomous breath and felt a thin piercing chill.

Where it came from
Living Death was originally printed in the Tempest expansion of 1997, designed to introduce a high-impact, graveyard-centric effect that fundamentally alters the board state. For the Tales of Middle-earth Commander set, the card was reimagined to fit the thematic landscape of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, specifically capturing the somber, apocalyptic nature of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. The card mechanics remain true to the original's intent: a sweeping exchange of power between the battlefield and the graveyard, mirroring the cycle of life and death central to the struggle for Middle-earth.
The illustration for this iteration, created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, moves away from the visceral horror of the original Tempest art to focus on a more cinematic, epic scale. Manzanedo’s work emphasizes the haunting atmosphere of the undead and the tragic toll of war, aligning with the dark aesthetic of the Lord of the Rings source material. The reception within the community was largely positive, as players appreciated the seamless integration of a staple mechanical effect into a narrative-driven set that honors the tone of the fantasy epic.
