Living Death

Living Death was originally released in the 1997 Tempest set, designed by Mike Elliott to provide a high-impact, graveyard-centric board wipe. It quickly became a staple in black-aligned decks for its ability to generate massive swings in momentum, effectively swapping the contents of the battlefield with the graveyard. The version found in Duel Decks: Phyrexia vs. the Coalition, released in 2010, was curated to highlight the thematic conflict between the biomechanical horrors of Phyrexia and the allied forces of Dominaria.

This specific printing features the iconic, haunting illustration by Charles Gillespie. Gillespie’s work on the card captures the macabre nature of the spell, depicting a grotesque revival of the dead that reinforces the gothic horror aesthetic intrinsic to the Phyrexian lore.
