Where it came from
Lorcan, Warlock Collector was introduced in the 2021 Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander set. This product marked the first time Magic: The Gathering integrated the lore and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into its core trading card format, bridging two of Wizards of the Coast’s most iconic properties. The character was designed to embody the flavor of an entity that harvests souls and power, fitting squarely into the set’s thematic exploration of dark magic and supernatural bargains.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a moody, atmospheric palette to emphasize Lorcan’s role as an otherworldly archivist. The design sought to balance the traditional visual language of Magic: The Gathering with the specific aesthetic cues of D&D’s warlocks and arcane collectors. Upon its release, the card was well-received by commander players for its unique ability to recur creatures from opponents' graveyards, solidifying its place as a staple for deck builders focused on graveyard-based strategies.
