Where it came from
Grim Hireling was released in 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander set, a crossover product between Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering and the iconic Dungeons & Dragons tabletop franchise. Designed to facilitate the 'treasure' token mechanic that defines the set's aggressive, gold-oriented playstyle, the card represents a classic mercenary figure rooted in the lore of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Caroline Gariba, who leaned into the gritty, utilitarian aesthetic of an underworld operative. The design intent was to capture the opportunistic nature of a rogue who rewards their employer for aggressive combat maneuvers. It was generally well-received by the commander community for its efficiency and thematic cohesion, quickly becoming a staple in red-black decks focused on combat damage and artifact synergy.
