Provenance

Where it came from

Lorescale Coatl was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set, the final installment of the Shards of Alara block for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique in that every card included was multicolored, reflecting the merging of the five shards of the plane of Alara back into a single world. The card represents the Bant and Simic aesthetic overlap, focusing on the growth-oriented mechanics of drawing cards to increase the creature's power.

The artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the early history of Magic: The Gathering who is perhaps best known for his iconic illustration of Black Lotus. Rush’s design for the Coatl emphasizes the serpentine, mystical nature of the creature, utilizing a vibrant color palette that aligns with the Simic Combine’s blue and green identity. Upon its release, it became a popular choice in casual and semi-competitive decks for its ability to scale rapidly in size throughout the course of a game.
