Where it came from
Architects of Will was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in the game's history because every single card included was multicolored, representing the final convergence of the fractured plane of Alara into a single, unified world. The card depicts the Esper faction, a society defined by its obsession with etherium-based perfection and artificial evolution, fitting the set's narrative of factions colliding and sharing their distinctive magical aesthetics.
The artwork for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy illustrator known for his significant contributions to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. Briclot's design for Architects of Will leans into the cold, mechanical aesthetic of Esper, using intricate blue and silver filigree to emphasize the faction's commitment to artificial augmentation. Upon its release, the card was noted for its utility in controlling the top of a player's library, finding its place as a functional piece within the broader strategic environment of the Alara block.
