Where it came from
Lux Cannon was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin set, a landmark Magic: The Gathering expansion that marked the game's return to the fan-favorite metal-themed plane of Mirrodin. The card represents a recurring piece of Mirrodin's lore, functioning as an artifact that players can slowly charge up over several turns to destroy any permanent on the battlefield, reflecting the slow but inevitable buildup of power within the Phyrexian-infested landscape.
The artwork for the original Scars of Mirrodin printing was illustrated by the artist Dan Dos Santos. His design focused on the visceral, mechanical aesthetic of the Mirran resistance, highlighting the artifact's industrial architecture. The card was received by players as a flexible, if slow, control tool, often finding a home in competitive decks that could manipulate the artifact's counters to bypass its intended recharge speed.
